New Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, National Institution for Transforming India Suman Bery is a renowned economist, academic, and author. He took over the charge after the resignation of former Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar Rajiv Kumar who was appointed as a Vice Chairman of the Commission five years ago in August 2017.  His term was going to over on 30th April 2022.  Suman Bery will take charge of NITI Aayog from 1st May, 2022.

He was the former director general of National Council of Applied Economic Research, former Indian country director of International Growth Centre.  He is also a non-resident fellow at Brussels-based think tank devoted to policy research and economic issues. 

Suman Bery was a member of the Raghuram Rajan Committee on Financial Sector Reforms. This committee was constituted in 2007 by the Government of India.  He was a member of the Economic Advisory Council during the primeminister-ship of Dr. Manmohan Singh.  

Suman Bery received his schooling from The Doon School in Dehradun. He also spent a year at Oakham School in the United Kingdom. He studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. Later he received a Master’s degree in public affairs from Princeton University.  Dr. Bery is a PhD holder and his dissertation at Princeton University was focused on the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy instruments.   He is credited with writing about financial sector reforms in India, Latin American banking crises. Dr. Suman Bery was chief economist of Shell International Company, based in The Hague, The Netherlands, from early 2012 till mid-2021s.
