INTRODUCTION
NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog came in to existence on 1st January, 2015 replacing the Planning Commission which was set up in 15th March, 1950. NITI Aayog works as a Think Tank’ for Government of India. NITI Aayog also provides relevant advice to the Centre and States. At the core of NITI Aayog there are two hubs – Team India Hub and the Knowledge and Innovation Hub. The Team India Hub leads the engagement of states with the Central government and the Knowledge and Innovation Hub builds NITI’s think-tank capabilities.
NITI Aayog has become a State of the Art Resource Centre, with the necessary resources, knowledge and skills, that will enable it to act with speed, promote research and innovation, provide strategic policy vision for the government, and deal with contingent issues. NITI Aayog acts as an essential platform of the Government of India to bring States to act together in national interest.
Prime Ministers is the Chairman of NITI Aayog. A Vice Chairperson is appointed to run it. Apart from it, NITI Aayog has a team of experts, who assist the Vice Chairperson to frame and implement the plans.
NITI Aayog provides dynamism to the framework of the ‘National Agenda’ of the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers. It nurtures shared federalism through continuous structural cooperation initiatives and mechanisms with the states recognizing the fact that a strong state makes a strong nation. NITI Aayog develops a mechanism for building credible plans gradually to higher levels, starting from the village level. It ensures that economic strategy and policy focus on areas where national security interests are involved. NITI Aayog also pay special attention to those sections of the society who have not received adequate benefits of economic development.
Apart from it, NITI Aayog formulates the framework of strategic and long-term policies, initiatives and programs and monitor the progress and efficiency of the same. Its other responsibility are advocating and fostering partnerships between key stake-holders national and international think tanks, including academic and policy research institutions. It also innovates the knowledge of enterprise collaboration mechanisms through groups of national and international experts, professionals and other partners.
NITI Aayog’s other works are to provide a platform for resolution of inter-sector and inter-departmental issues to accelerate the implementation of the development agenda.It also create state-of-the-arts resource centers that help in dissemination of best practices and good governance to stakeholders in sustainable and equitable development.
NITI Aayog proactively evaluate and monitor the implementation of programs and initiatives, identifying the resources needed in a manner that has the potential for success and scaling up delivery. NITI Aayog has to focus on capacity building and technology innovation in the implementation of programs and initiatives. It has also the responsibility to undertake other activities required in the execution of the national development agenda and fulfillment of the stated objectives.
